Meet the Teacher
Katherine Powers
Welcome! I'm so glad you're here. My name is Katherine, and I am the creator of and teacher here at The Power of Music Studio. Simply put, I believe that music is powerful and can transform lives. That is why I do this - because music is so much bigger than just music. Like other arts, it is an expression of the soul. Giving students of all ages and abilities the power to communicate their complicated and ever-changing emotions continues to be of vital importance in this day and age, and music is one of the tools that can help them do that.

About Me
I grew up in a small town just outside of Edmonton and was homeschooled until high school. I love hot cups of tea and long books. My reading interests range from World War II historical fiction to fantasy and science fiction. I am always up for a new book recommendation! Some other hobbies I enjoy are long walks in nature and trying out new baking recipes. This summer, my husband, Jay, and I were married! We are enjoying this new phase of life and are currently settled in West Edmonton.

Experience
I have grown up playing piano since about the time I could walk, thanks to my mother, who is also a pianist. I have my Royal Conservatory of Music Level 10 Certification. Along the way, I received two Gold Medals for the highest Level 6 & 7 exam marks in the province. I have several years of teaching experience under my belt, from beginner to advanced students. Additionally, I have experience working with students with special needs, such as autism, dyslexia, and ADHD. I have also been fortunate to study under the wonderful guidance of one of the keyboardists from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. I am known for creating personalized lessons to fit the needs of each and every student I work with.

Teaching Philosophy
I believe that the most important aspect of any music education is to help students learn to love music. My goal in teaching is to encourage students with gentle guidance as they discover the world at their fingertips. I work with parents to set realistic goals for each student that bring joy instead of frustration. Every student has a different personality and style of learning; I believe that it is my job to discover that style and use it to help the student thrive in their lessons. Struggles are an opportunity to learn more, both about music and about yourself. Piano lessons are more than just learning to play songs; they are a way for students to discover the endless possibilities waiting for them.
